The pressure is certainly on both sides who are a few more poor results away from really disastrous seasons. It is of course always worth pointing out that Eibar are a tiny club that is punching above their weight even by being at this level and they have set the bar very high in recent years. However they really have fallen short of their own standards for much of this season. They’ve taken 2 points from 3 games since the restart, which isn’t an awful return when you consider they’ve played Real Madrid, Athletic and Getafe but they could do with a win to boost their survival hopes.

Valencia won their first match following the interruption to the season by beating Osasuna 2-0 at Mestalla last time out. They are now 7 points off the top four though and face a battle just to reach the Europa League places which may be their most realistic target now. The pressure is certainly on Albert Celades and it would be no surprise if we were to see a coaching switch at Valencia this summer.

Both sides are likely to line up 4-4-2 but they are very different teams in terms of how they look to play. Eibar press very high and at times leave space in behind while Valencia are still something of a counter-attacking team that is happy to drop deeper and play on the break, particularly when they are away. That makes for an interesting match-up and it’ll be interesting to see who triumphs here.

Eibar vs Valencia Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw

It’s really tough to pick a winner here. Eibar played well against Athletic in their first home game back following the restart and were unfortunate not to win the game. A similar level of performance here should at least yield a point against a Valencia side that has a poor average of just 0.86 points per away game this term.

Barcelona are enduring their worst start to a season in 33 years.

BARCELONA (Reuters) – Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman is grateful to Lionel Messi for endorsing his appointment and praising his impact even though they are enduring their worst start to a season in 33 years.

Messi said a young team were growing under the Dutchman as they bid to improve on their current fifth place in La Liga, eight points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

“I’m not sure if it makes me more calm but I’m grateful because he’s a very important player to this club and in the world of football, so anyone would be happy for him to speak well about them,” Koeman told a news conference on Monday.

“But I feel the same way, I’m trying to get the team to move forward. It’s a transitional year with lots of changes but he’s still a very important part of this team and if he can help us improve more for the rest of this season we can be happy.”

Messi, who is heading into the final six months of his contract with Barca, will miss Tuesday’s home game against Eibar due to an ankle injury but should be fit to face Huesca on Jan. 3.

French winger Ousmane Dembele is set to return to the team against Eibar after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Eibar are hovering above the relegation zone but gave champions Real Madrid good game this month before losing 3-1.

“They are a very competitive team, who always try to press their opponents high up the pitch,” Koeman said.

“We will have to play well and make the most of the space when they press us. If we’re not on top form, it’ll be a tough game.”
