With automobiles constantly evolving and finding new technology for better, safer, and more optimized vehicles, there seems to be a downward shift for one vehicular system in particular. The popularity of manual transmissions is dwindling.
Most vehicles have the manual transmission as the standard option on a model’s base trim, but most upper-level trims come standard with an automatic transmission, especially larger vehicles (SUVs and crossovers). Kia Motors offers a mix of manual and automatic transmissions, and one of the hatchbacks come with manual transmission as an option on its high-tier trim. Take a look at what vehicles you can get if manually shifting is more your style.
2018 Kia Forte
Available as a sedan and a hatchback, the 2018 Kia Forte sedan has three trims (LX, S, and EX) and two engine choices that make up the powertrain. The standard on the LX and S is a 2.0-liter DOHC engine made with the Atkinson Cycle to lower emissions. All engines are also optimized with dual continuously variable valve timing and an enhanced version of fuel delivery. This engine can generate 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. The standard transmission pairing is a six-speed manual to the LX trim, with the option to upgrade to an electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic. That’s one saving grace for manual transmission lovers – Sportmatic is a system design that allows drivers to disengage the automatic transmission and open up the ability to manually shift gears by moving the gear shift knob to the left when set on “Drive”.
2018 Kia Forte5
The hatchback version of the Kia Forte is none other than the Forte5. Powering the base trim (LX) and the second trim (EX) is the same 2.0-liter DOHC engine, but without the Atkinson Cycle. This engine is also optimized with dual continuously variable valve timing and uses gasoline direct injection for faster fuel delivery and increased performance. Able to generate 164 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, the base and EX are tied to a six-speed automatic transmission. The third and high-end trim, the SX, is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, but consumers can opt-in for a six-speed manual transmission if they wish.
2018 Kia Rio and Rio 5-Door
Another Kia vehicle that comes in more than one flavor, the Kia Rio can be driven as a sedan or a hatchback. With three trims, LX, S, and EX, the Rio changes the game by powering all three trims with the same engine. Under the hood of each is a 1.6-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine that can generate 130 horsepower and is optimized with dual continuously variable valve timing and gasoline direct injection. As usual, the base trim (LX) is paired with a six-speed manual transmission with the option to upgrade to a six-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic. The Kia Rio 5-door hatchback is designed with the same powertrain and is paired to the same transmission options.
2018 Kia Soul
This funky fresh hatchback comes in three trims – the Kia Soul Base, Plus, and Exclaim. Each trim has a different engine making up the powertrain, and starting with the base, it’s powered by a 1.6-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine that can generate 130 horsepower and 118 lb-ft of torque. Like other Kia Motors engines, this engine is optimized with dual continuously variable valve timing and gasoline direct injection for optimal performance. The Kia Soul Base also comes paired to a six-speed manual transmission but can opt-in for an electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic.
See? There’s still plenty of great vehicles that come with manual transmission standard, and if not, most will offer manual transmission via the Sportmatic design. It’s actually a great option for consumers who may be purchasing or leasing a new Kia Motors vehicle for more than one driver. Since Sportmatic allows the driver to choose between using automatic and manual transmission, one driver who prefers to manually gearshift can do so, and those who rather let the car shift gears can do so without fret. It’s a win-win situation for the whole family.
